Follow-up outcomes of the efforts in the Eco-Model Cities in FY 2009

in the Cabinet Secretariat

The Japanese government has selected cities as Eco-Model Cities that engage in pioneering challenges, including a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with high targets since July 2008, in order to specifically and simply present the ideal image of the low-carbon society to build in the future. Relevant government agencies have been cooperatively supporting the efforts to achieve goals. The selected 13 environmental model cities established specific action plans to achieve drastic reduction goals they had individually set and released them in April 2009. After one year since the establishment of the plans, individual local governments submitted reports on the progress of their efforts under their action plans in FY 2009.

Based on the reports submitted by local governments, the Joint Bureau for Regional Revitalization in Cabinet Secretariat selected efforts that can be widely applicable to other local governments (Attachment1) and evaluated the progress of projects in each city (Attachment2). Outcomes are released.

Intellectuals in the Eco-Model City Evaluation Advisory Group, which was held on May 19, 2010, (Attachment3) also provided advice on the evaluations.

We will provide advice and support for the expansion and improvement of efforts based on successful and unsuccessful examples in Japan and overseas while following up on the status of the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in each environmental model city in autumn, and we consider reevaluation of selected cities as necessary.
